Christmas Magic

Both Hunter and Lily truly believe. Marhsall, being the best big brother, has done nothing to lead them to believe otherwise. The cutest thing happened Christmas Eve. We went to my Mom's house for our traditional Czeck dinner. We got home about 10:30 and hoped Hunter and Lil would be sound asleep. To the contrary, they were totally wound up with excitement. Jim's Iphone has an application that lets you hold the phone up to the sky and it shows you the constellations and stars you are looking at. When we got out of the car, he pointed it at the sky and there on the screen was also Santa's sleigh and reindeer who appeared to be ready to land momentarily in our neighborhood!
The kids screamed, "Oh no! Santa's coming, Let's get to bed!" and ran in the house. They tore off their clothes, got on jammies and dove under their covers and begged us to tuck them in. Lily told me to "pray faster." Hunter assumed the mummy pose and laid stiff as a board pretending to sleep as Jim tucked him in. When I tried to chat with Lily about Christmas Eve, she told me to "be quiet!" When I kept on talking she said "What part of 'be quiet' don't you understand?!" They were both sound asleep within 15 minutes and Santa worked his magic later that night. Marshall was with his father's family in Virginia and he got a white Christmas. He came home a day early and we celebrated all over again when he got home. We hope your Christmas was magical too!

Reflections on 2010

Wow! This has been a busy fall and winter as you can see from the lack of posting activity! I began the last day of this year with coffee on my dock, listening to the newly hatched herons making noises in their nest in my neighbor's pine trees. Later I am taking the kids to burn off some energy at the beach before we head to a friends house later for a party. It is the perfect time to reflect on the past year and look ahead.
We just celebrated Marshall's 13th birthday and Lily's birthday right before Christmas. Lily and Hunter both learned to ride their bikes without training wheels the week of Thanksgiving. Jim and I took a second trip to St. Croix this year. I went for work and he got to tag along for the weekend! We also went to Memphis for a weekend for my 25th college reunion and had a blast. We won the "most original" table at our festive meal at our church with our Chinese New Year themed table. Moon Festival with our Families from Children from China group was the best ever held at our local science center. Everyone except Marshall had strep in December which made holiday preparations a bit harder but Christmas was magical. Hunter was a shepperd and Lily was a sheep in our church Christmas pageant.

There are so many blessings we are thankful for this year. For me these include:

Reconnecting with old friends especially Sissie, Julie and Eric, Heather, Bianca, Ann Webb, Kathryn, Carol G.; connecting with new friends who also adopted children from Vietnam with Holt; my loving husband who encouraged me to attend a yoga retreat where I had a rejuvenating weekend with old friends and new and began to learn yoga; my wonderful yogis - Tara, Denise, Ericka and Erin; losing 30 pounds and keeping most of it off; Connie Lowe who encouraged me to run several 5ks this year; that Jim and I have jobs we enjoy with people we like and respect; new neighbors who are great and have kids; that when our beautiful pine tress were hit and killed with lightening in September that our house was not harmed; our family trip to Montana; that all of our children have fabulous, caring teachers this year; that our mothers and siblings are all doing fine; that our brave brother-in-law Jim G., who was shot in the line of duty as a police officer in Chicago is recovering and returning to work soon; that my brother David's family sold their home in NC and were able to move back to Florida; that my brother William remarried and is working in his chosen profession; that Hunter and foster sister Jaya were able to spend time together this year; that Hunter has learned vocabulary to express his feelings; and best of all - we became God parents to the incredible Ms. Sarah who is from Ethiopia.

2010 was really a glorious year for our family and we are looking forward to 2011! We wish you much health and happiness in the coming year! Happy New Year!

School Has Begun

How is it that my baby girl has started kindergarten already?! She is absolutely loving it! Her teacher greeted her by name on the meet the teacher day the day before school started. "How do you know who I am?" said Lily in amazement. "Well, I know Hunter and you are with him and I know I have a Lily with the same last name so you must be her!" Lily got the biggest grin. Then before we left, the teacher gave the kids a bag of goodies. Lily left the room saying " I think I am going to like this kindergarten thing!" This was music to our ears because she spent the summer telling us she wasn't ready for big kid's school.

Hunter started first grade with an excellent teacher and Marshall is in his seventh grade. He will be taller than Mom by the end of the year if not by Christmas. He grew about 4 inches and his voice went down about 4 octaves over the summer. I suspect the girls will start calling soon! Hope you are off to a great school year too!

We are winners!

Hunter and Lily followed in Marshall’s foot steps and they had their first karate belt test a few weeks ago. It was so nice to have all our kids testing at one time instead of trying to hold Lily back from the floor when Marshall was testing. All three did great. Because Marshall already has his black belt, he did the test for practice only.

This year they gave awards for “best test” in the categories of beginners, intermediate and advanced. On Friday morning, Hunter told me he knew was going to get a trophy or medal for best test. I told him to try his best but to remember that 40 other kids were testing at the same time. He said “Why I not get trophy like Marshall?! He got trophy – I get trophy!” On the way to the karate studio, Jim and I talked about how difficult our night would become if either Lily or Hunter won best test and the other didn’t.

When it was time to hand out the beginner award, the karate master said they had a very tough time deciding because there were 2 kids that were tied. But, since they could only pick one, it went to Hunter. He stood up to get his certificate and award and the karate master leaned over to tell Lily that she also did great. Ms. Lily apparently decided that she must have also won best test because she jumped up and shook the karate Master’s hand and bent down for a medal to be placed on her neck. He looked at is wife and then told the crowd “Or…you do what God says,” and promptly placed a medal on her neck and handed her someone else’s certificate! I found out later that they were, in fact, torn between Hunter and Lily.

Afterwards, we took a picture with the karate masters who own the school and Lily and Hunter were both beaming from ear to ear. Lily held up her medals and exclaimed with one arm around her brothers “We are WINNERS!!” Later, the karate master said that her excitement alone justified them changing their minds on the spot and giving her an award too. They are printing up her certificate this week.

I love that Hunter set his mind to something and made it happen. He really shined during the test. I love even more that Lily had the confidence that she too deserved recognition and had the innocence and gumption to jump up and go for it! Best of all, I love that the teachers felt God telling them to do what they felt was right for our kids and they weren’t afraid to do it and say it in front of all those other families and children. Thank you, Master Tim and Ms. Debbie! We are truly blessed.

Montana (no, not Hannah!)

It's been a while since I've last posted but its been a crazy busy summer. Hunter successfully completed kindergarten, Marshall made it through 6th grade (barely) and Lily has finished with pre-K! We took our summer vacation at the end of June to Glacier National park in Montana by way of Spokane and Cour d'Alene Idaho. The weather was perfect - highs in the low 70s, lows in the 40s at night and daylight from 4:30 am until 11 pm!! I rode a horse for the first time in 37 years and lived to write about it! The kids bonded over huckleberry candies, hiking and DS games. We saw black bears (one a wee too close), antelope, bison, doll sheep (very funny looking creatures), eagles, the world's largest purple spoon and all kinds of gorgeous scenery. I could live it northern Idaho or Montana if it wasn't for all the darn snow it gets in the winter. Speaking of snow - Hunter saw his very first snow. He was very, very excited but after 2 minutes he started wailing because he didn't understand why his hands were freezing and stinging. It didn't stop him from trying to have a snow ball fight with Marshall or sliding on his butt down a glacier. Yes - there was still plenty of snow the third week of June in Glacier. We had a lovely time and it was hard to come home to 90 plus degree heat and humidity. Enjoy the photos!

Our 1 year Vietnamversary!! And our truth.

A year ago on April 13, 2009, we met Hunter for the first time and signed his official adoption papers less than an hour later. After 22 long, hard months of waiting (often not so patiently), he suddenly joined our family forever.

The day started with us being left by our guide at the hotel and our car showing up an hour late to take us to the orphanage and the driver getting lost. We will never forget our first sight of Hunter. We expected to be ushered into a room, wait and have some sort of formal meeting. Instead, he came running out from behind a corner, blew straight by me and Jim and ran right to Marshall to look at his hand held video game!

Lily immediately started wailing. So loud, in fact, that we have almost no audible video from those precious minutes at the orphanage. We knew she was insanely jealous but we thought it was because Hunter was getting the attention and we were talking to the foster parents and orphanage officials and the babies. Only this week did she tell me she was crying because Marshall was showing Hunter his video games and not her!!

From the very first moment we met him, he was exuberant, happy and loving. Our child with an "expressive speech delay" had no problem rattling off to pretty waitresses, taxi drivers, tour guides or just about anyone. He didn't hesitate to tell anyone we were his new family and that we "eat a lot!" The only time he cried was when we tried to get him to take a nap or told him he couldn't use the computer. He immediately took to all of us, ice cream, cartoons, books, swimming, travel, hotels, drawing, flying, bike riding, roller coaster riding, boats, all American food, our dogs, our neighbors, our church, our friends and relatives.

This is not to say that our transition was all rosy. We had about a 6 week honeymoon stage before he started with boundary testing, crying in frustration over the language barrier (particularly when he thought he couldn't get us to understand he wasn't ready to go to sleep at 10 pm!), intolerable aggressive behavior towards Lily, a male chauvinist attitude towards girls in general and mom in particular, exceedingly poor sportsmanship, an inability to share, pouting when he didn't immediately get his way, etc... Looking back, this all seems so relatively minor and what should have been so expected at the time but of course it was very stressful on all of us. Yes, there were days I wondered what the heck I had done to our family. I had inappropriate outbursts at all the kids in sheer exhaustion and frustration. Did Holt make a mistake in placing this child with us? Why were we drawn to adopt an older child and what made us think we were capable? There were agonizing days of guilt when I didn't much like this little person new to our home and wasn't sure how I would grow to love him. We talked to Holt, to friends with older adopted children, other parents in our Dong Nai group, our pediatrician and others. We got through it. We did not abuse our son or send him back to Vietnam.

And look at us today - a year later. Over the last year, Hunter has revealed some of the things he endured in Vietnam. We will never know really what his experience was but it wasn't close to ideal. He is terrified to have anyone speak to him in Vietnamese and swears he will never go back, not even for a visit. Of course, this will likely change one day which we hope for. His achievements this year are nothing short of miraculous and heroic. He is in kindergarten and he is reading short sentences, knows his whole alphabet, can write short stories and poems (mostly about how he loves his family and ice cream!), can count to 100 by 1s, 5s and 10s, can add single digits, understands sets, can find any game on a computer or video game, ties his own shoes, gets himself fully dressed and groomed everyday, communicates fully in English all the time. he is polite, always says please and thank you. He is incredibly loving and adores the family. He is the first at church to run up when the minister prepares communion and nothing makes him happier than participating loudly at the service. He still has the most soulful, beautiful eyes. He is our little hero and our love for him grows daily.

Why am I rehashing all this today? Why not just post a montage of glorious photos from the year? (which I will do later this weekend!). Because yesterday the Russian President decided to halt international adoptions to the US because of the insane and cruel actions of an adoptive mom to her 7 year old son. The Joint Council on International Adoptions has asked families with successful adoption storied to tell their truth today.

Is older child adoption difficult? Absolutely. Does it turn your house upside down even under good circumstances? Of course. Does it overwhelm you and scare you and turn you into a person you don't even know some days? Can it cause you anxiety and panic attacks and depression? YES!!!

But...you work through it, you use your resources, ALL OF THEM. Its hard, damn hard but my God - there is nothing like hearing Hunter tell me at night how much he loves me and listen to him say his prayers thanking God for all the good people and things in his life. Nothing better than watching him read a book for the first time or play around with Marshall and Lily in the yard. Hunter is such a blessing to us in so many ways, we can't begin to count them all. A year. Can it really only be a year since we first met?

Hug your children today and praise God for whichever way they came into your family. Pray that families struggling post-adoption get help when they need it and that government officials will not penalize waiting children for the stupidity of one.

Hunter, Marshall and Lily we love you and are so proud of you!

Happy Birthday Hunter!

Our boy is 7!! We met and adopted Hunter last year on April 13. We had missed his birthday by 11 days. He has had to wait almost an entire year to celebrate his birthday for the first time. For months we have been hearing "When my birthday? Why so long?!" At last, as of yesterday, Hunter is 7! We started celebrating last weekend by spending 2 days at Disney and met up with the Secrists and their beautiful girl An who was from the same orphanage as Hunter. What a joy to see these kids home together with their forever families!

Hunter didn't know what to expect from the parks and of course, was blown away. At Animal Kingdom he about lost his mind when he saw kangaroos start hopping. On the safari ride at every turn he was exclaiming "Mom!!!! You see dat?!!! He was astounded by the elephants and the giraffes. He rode every ride fearlessly including Mount Everest, Big Thunder Railroad and Splash Mountain. The kids all loved the Kali river rapids and put up with Mom wanting to see the Hall of Presidents show. Hunter's favorite was Buzz Light year because he was allowed to shoot lasers at Robots. We had fabulous weather and the waits weren't too bad. Hunter gave Mickey the biggest hug and Lily told Minnie that she loved her makeup!

Last night we celebrated with lots of seafood and an ice cream cake Hunter was so excited. Then Jim camped out in the back yard in a tent with him last night. The end to a perfect 7 year old's day.

Hunter - we are so very proud of you. You are resilient, happy, smart and loving. We rejoice daily that we are no longer loving you from afar and that you are home with us for many more birthdays to come. You are a treasure from God. We love you, son!!!
